How to Prepare Your Hair for Box Braids

Everything you need to know before your box braid appointment — from washing to detangling.

Box braids look best on hair that's clean, conditioned, and fully detangled. Skipping prep is the number one reason braids feel tight, itch in the first week, or slip out early.

Wash 24–48 hours before your appointment. Use a clarifying shampoo to remove product buildup, then a moisturizing shampoo to restore softness. Don't braid on freshly washed (same-day) hair — it's too slick and the parts won't hold.

Deep condition for at least 30 minutes under a plastic cap. Look for a protein-and-moisture balanced mask if your hair has been colored or heat-styled recently. Rinse thoroughly so no residue is left behind.

Stretch your hair before you arrive. Blow it out on low heat or band it overnight in 6–8 sections. Stretched hair takes neater parts and shorter install time, which keeps your braider on schedule (and may save you on add-on fees).

Detangle in sections from ends to roots with a wide-tooth comb. Show up with edges down, no heavy oils on the scalp, and bring a satin scarf for the ride home.
